Life, choice, and freedom

Freedom is often misunderstood. This is one of the many articles or reflections that I have read that have helped to get closer to the heart of true freedom, and so I am sharing it with my readers on this First Monday Re-blog.
And I ask those who read it… Do you consider yourself free when you have a menu of choices from which you may choose? This is a sadly limited view of freedom – and of life itself – reducing our existence to the wanting and obtaining of external things. To be free is to live out the truth – to be who we are created to be and to give ourselves away… To love.

As A Little Child

Here are some thoughts, looking at two ways of understanding freedom, and so viewing the world. The two ways are life and choice (do you see where I’m going here?).

The freedom of life, is when the thing in question, be it a seed, a goat, a mother or an unborn child, is given the space and opportunity to go out of itself, growing, giving itself away, revealing the secret of its nature. To be free, is to be youwith all that that entails; to live out your gifts, talents, hopes, dreams, strengths, and weakness too. To not be free, is to have not-you imposed upon you, whether by violence or deception.

Freedom of choice on the other hand, considers matters as external to an individual you which is an abstract notion of an arbitrary will. It looks at all things as essentially separate from you, and with no…

  1. Hello Christina the great we blog the subject is wonderful and reflective. I do feel I think it was a question you had what I have choices more freedom yes something’s I don’t think we have choices in because I feel it’s either yes or no you have to do what’s right or it’s wrong. But if it’s not that way it’s okay to have a choice of something yes I like that hope I make sense here I hope I’m on the subject blessings to you and your blogging friend they wrote a great piece thank you for sharing blessings

  2. Yes, we all make choices every day and strive to do what is right. God gave us freedom – freedom for excellence, the freedom to grow and become the people that we are created to be. Thank you for reflecting with me!
